Yes. The government battery discount reduces the upfront cost of an eligible system, but it does not normally cover the full purchase and installation cost.

Your remaining cost will depend on the battery capacity, inverter requirements, installation complexity, electrical upgrades and the value of the STCs generated by your system.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is designed to provide a discount of around 30% for a range of eligible battery systems, although the actual amount can vary.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is available to eligible Australian households, businesses and community organisations.

To qualify, the battery must meet the program’s technical and installation requirements. An eligible battery system must generally have a nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh and be connected to a new or existing eligible solar PV system.

The battery must also be an approved product and installed by an appropriately accredited installer.

Eco Foot can check your existing solar system, property and proposed battery configuration to determine whether the installation is likely to meet the program requirements.

The government battery incentive helps reduce the cost of purchasing and installing an eligible solar battery storage system.

The discount is provided through STCs generated according to the usable capacity of the battery. Eligible systems can have a nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh, although STCs can only be claimed on the first 100 kWh of usable battery capacity.

The discount may be provided directly through the retailer or installer as an upfront reduction in the purchase price, depending on how the STCs are assigned.

The battery, installation and associated components must comply with the relevant program requirements.

There is no single fixed dollar rebate for every battery installation.

Under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, the discount is calculated using the battery’s eligible usable capacity and the number of STCs it can generate. The Australian Government currently aims for the support to represent approximately 30% of the upfront cost for a range of eligible battery systems.

Since 1 May 2026, the amount of support also varies according to battery size, with different STC factors applying across different capacity ranges.

Because of this, the final discount for a 10 kWh, 20 kWh or 30 kWh battery can be different. Eco Foot can calculate the estimated discount when preparing your quote.

Possibly. Owner-occupiers may still qualify if the property’s existing solar PV system was installed at least 10 years ago and all other eligibility requirements are met.

Eligible Victorian rental providers can also receive a solar PV rebate of up to $1,400 for a maximum of two rental properties per financial year. The property, renters and rental provider must meet Solar Victoria’s eligibility requirements, and an agreement must be completed between the rental provider and renters.
