How do LEDs work?

The Process of Luminescence
The working principle is based on the electroluminescence phenomenon. An LED consists of a positively charged p-type and negatively charged n-type regions. With a potential energy barrier between the holes in the p-region and the electrons in the n-region, the boundary separating the two regions is referred to as the p-n junction. The electrons traverse the p-n junction and recombine with the holes when a forward voltage is supplied. The electrons lose energy throughout this process, and that energy is released as photons or light. The colour of the light that is released depends on the wavelength of the photons that are released. As long as the forward voltage is applied and they are producing light, the recombination process will continue.
